Steps for Starting Poultry Farming in Nigeria
If you want to start poultry farming in Nigeria, follow the step by step tasks mentioned below.
Farm Location
The main thing required for setting up poultry farming business is a piece of suitable land. Generally, a plot of land of 120*60 square meters is suitable for setting up a medium sized poultry farm in Nigeria. The size of land depends on the number of birds you want to raise and the farming system. Acquiring land is the most expensive part of commercial poultry farming business in Nigeria. Try to buy the land far from the town or big cities. Select a fresh environment and pollution free area. It will be better if you can buy the land in a rural area. Because, land and labors are highly available in a cheaper rate in the rural areas. Establishing a poultry farm in a rented land is absolutely a bad idea. However, while selecting land, keep in mind some important facilities like great source of water, free from all types of animals and predators, a market near the farm, proper transportation facilities etc.
Farming Systems
According to the weather and climate of Nigeria, there are three profitable systems of raising poultry.
- Extensive system,
- Semi-intensive system and
- Intensive poultry farming system.
Poultry Breeds
There are three types of breed which are very suitable for commercial poultry farming in Nigeria. You can select any for your farm. Modern poultry breeds are highly productive and commercial raising is also very profitable. Modern layers produce more eggs than traditional breeds and broilers grow faster than ever. Selecting proper breeds for commercial production depends on you. Before starting, determine what type of product do you want to produce. Three types of common and commercial poultry breeds are shortly described below.
- Layers: Layer poultry breeds are used for commercial egg production. If you want to produce eggs commercially, select highly productive layer breeds.
- Broilers: Broiler poultry are very fast growing poultry breeds. Generally, they gain slaughter weight within a very short time by consuming certain amount of food. And they are used for commercial meat production.
- Cockerels: Cockerels are another types of meat productive poultry breeds. Cockerel has a special demand for some people. Generally, they grow slower than other breeds. But very hardy and can survive and adopt themselves in almost all types of environment.
According to your desired production select proper breed. Each type of poultry breed need special type of care and management. So, select proper breed and take good care of your birds to be successful in poultry farming in Nigeria.
Housing
Good housing is very important for commercial poultry farming in Nigeria. Housing system depends on the poultry breeds and farming method. Housing design varies in accordance with various types of poultry raising methods. Follow the tips mentioned below while building suitable house for your poultry birds.
- First of all, the poultry house must have to be well ventilated. Well ventilation system keeps the bird healthy and productive.
- Make a suitable system for entrancing sufficient amount of fresh air and light inside the house.
- Try to make the house north to south faced.
- In case of making numerous houses, the distance between one house to another house would be about 40 feet.
- Before bringing the chick inside the farm, clean the house and entire farm area properly.
- Make deep liter clean it regularly.
- You can use some cheap materials like wooden or rice bran for making liter.
- Keep the feeding and watering equipment in proper distance form each other according to the number of birds and farming systems. And always clean all types of equipment regularly.
- Ensure that, your birds are free from all types of animals, insects or predators inside the house.
- House will be located in calm and quite place free from pollution and noise.
- In a word the house must have to have all types of required facilities for poultry birds. And this is one of the major conditions of success for poultry farming in Nigeria.
Feeding
Good and high quality food keeps the bird healthy and highly productive. Good quality fresh and nutritious food is the key to success in poultry farming business. Always provide adequate amount of food according to the number and age of poultry birds. Along with feeding good foods, always supply sufficient amount of clean and fresh water according to the daily demands of poultry. See poultry feed, broiler poultry feed and layer poultry feed.
Care and Management
Poultry birds are very sensitive and may caught by diseases easily. Generally they suffer by various types of viral, bacterial, fungal, nutritional and parasitic diseases. Proper vaccination is a must for keeping your birds diseases free, healthy and productive. So, vaccinate the birds timely. If somehow, diseases occurs in the farm then meet a vet doctor as soon as possible and listen to his advice.
Marketing
Easy to market of poultry products is the main benefits of poultry farming in Nigeria. There is already an established market for poultry eggs and meat with huge demand. So, you don’t have to think about marketing your products. You can sell your products in both local markets and big cities.
According to the above discussion, poultry farming in Nigeria is really lucrative and great business idea. As it is an already established business, so all types of necessary facilities are available. You just need some capital and practical knowledge for starting poultry farming in Nigeria.
I am thankful i found this well pack-edge website, thank you.
Thank you for your good words!
I appreciate you for this article,it has really inspired me to going into poultry business
THIS IS A VERY GOOD AND EDUCATIVE WRITE UP.
CAN YOU EDUCATE US ON THE NUMBER OF MONTHS FOR BOILERS TO REACH MARKET WEIGHT AND HOW OLD FOR THE LAYERS TO START LAYING .
Thank you for your inspiring feedback. Actually, broiler chickens reach marketing weight within their 5 to 7 months. And commercial layer chickens start laying within their 15 to 19 weeks of age. Thank you!
Thank you very much for your response . My little experience in this line of business revealed that one of the major challenges in poultry management in Nigeria is the very high cost of poultry feeds , this is very outrageous . Imagine spending an average of NGN79,000.00 weekly {for 1000kg of growers mash} to feed 1135 layers and 10 turkeys , and spending NGN85,000.00 for { 1000kg weekly of layers mash } for same number of birds . This is a major impediment/set back for a small farm owner . Is the government doing anything to assist i this direction – poultry feeds are rather very expensive . It could have been a disaster if we did not start with fewer {1200 layers,50 broilers, 10 turkeys } birds . Could you kindly reccommend where we can get poultry feeds at affordable prices ?
You should contact with other poultry farmers in your area. They will be able to suggest you the best. Thanks for your kind consideration!
It is really through that one of the set backs that medium poultry farmers are having is the high cost of commercial feed. But there is always a way out. Have you find a way out yet? If not let’s talk. 08036663706, 08078963772. Take care.
Obino, please where is your location, im in awka
Comment Text* Good day sir,i can produce a high quality feed for you cheaply compared to most commercial feed in town,i have a bus to transport the feeds too,08065688691 08051385693
Broilers takes 8 weeks to reach market weight
Layers take 5 to 6 months to drop the first egg

Marketing is the major problem of broiler production especially if it is not festive season. When you call buyer to price it, you will be surprised.
You can contact with the retailers in your area (who are selling broiler meat in the market). Hope you will get good price from them. Thank you!

Thank you for the concise write-up.
I have a few questions about the egg industry in Nigeria. Could you’ll help me get an idea on the market for eggs, need information regarding:
1) How many egg producers would be operating in Nigeria? Is it a few large farms or several small farms?
2) Are there many large commercial producers of eggs in the country? Could you name some.
3) Do these egg producers export to other countries or are eggs only produced for local needs?
4) How are eggs sold in Nigeria? packaged (in plastic or paper boxes) or loosely sold?
This is excellent, kudos to RF. Is the (high) rate of feed consumption commensurate with egg production in Nera Black layers?
It’s not true that high feed consumption rate commensurate with high egg production all the time. Egg production not only depends on high feed consumption rate, but also depends on some other factors. Such as age, genetics, nutrition, stress, lighting period etc. Over-feeding your hens can lead to obesity and a whole lot of health issues. Hope you understand! Thank you!
my name is am a poultry farmer; ineed a poultry that can contain 50000 birds, thanks, 08164190819
I intend to rear 20,000 chicks (freelance), I’ve fenced my very wide village farm land already, what kind of breeds do I need for total freelance farming. I am not interested in buying any special feed, but can stay even for a year for harvest. Advice please.
Leghorns, Australorps, Black Star, Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Rocks, ISA Browns, Orpingtons etc. will be most suitable for free range system. Thank you!
My name is Mrs Okoli, pls I want to go into agro feed business, can you help me on how much u think it will cost to start it up and the type of feeds.
Good piece, precise and very educative well done. Pls what breed of chicken will you recommend for egg and meat production ( i.e big and weighty) and where can I find the day old?
Australorps, Brahma, Orpingtons, New Hampshire, Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island Red, Speckled Sussex etc. are suitable for both meat and eggs production. Please contact any of your nearest poultry chick supplier (from where your local poultry farmers used to purchase layer and broiler chicks) to know more about the availability of chicks in your area.
I have been nursing the idea of having a poultry farming back home in Nigeria for years. I had wanted to help create job opportunities for my people. But the dishonesty and high crime rate in Nigeria are my greatest fear. But your words of courage are difficult to ignore. Nevertheless, because of your article I will sum the courage and take risk to invest in poultry farm in Nigeria.
Thanks a million
This is a follow up to my 1st response. Because of your suggestion, and word of encouragement, I have started the construction of a poultry farm in my village to house about 3,000 chickens. The roofing stage of the construction will be completed by the end of the month (March 2018). My greatest fear is the cost of feeding the birds to point of lay, and the vehicles for eggs distribution, and the battery cages. Poultry farming in Nigeria is a major venture. I had to construct my own well for water supply, bought generators because there is no reliable supply of electricity in Nigeria. We will be buying about 3,000 day old chickens in April, and I think that is when the actual financial challenge begins. I will keep you posted of my poultry farm challenge.
Interesting n inspiring…..tanks
I so much love this pies, I want to go into the poultry business, but don’t know how to start it and will put me in line, I so much appreciate, I will need more from you sir/ma

I so much love this pieces, I want to go into the poultry business, but don’t know how to start it and will put me in line, I so much appreciate, I will need a sample of a business proposal so urgent. thanks alot.
thanks very much for your write up very educating. My birds(layers) are passing watering stool (whitish and greenish) in color after taking them out they becomes ok but if not they will die. pls advice
You mentioned ‘after taking them out they become ok’. So the problems are probably inside the house. What about the ventilation systems? You should ensure enough flow of fresh air inside the house. Thank you!
Thank you for your write up. Please can I start a poultry farm in my compound. the size is two plot in Atan Ogun State
Yes, definitely you can. Thanks!
What will it cost to rear 800 layer birds to when they start laying presently
Thank you so much ROYSFARM for this post. I’m a US based student but I’m interested in poultry farming in Nigeria but I have not gotten the opportunity to attend any poultry farming lesson. I want to ask if you guys offer or recommend any type of webinar or online lectures on poultry farming and if I was to start investing with lets say 1.5 million naira excluding cost of land, what are the things I can do to make sure this money is invested properly and also yield maximum income. Thank you.
It will be better if you can attend some seminar practically, instead of online training. Along with this contact some farmers in your area and also visit some farms practically. If all these things are done properly, then you will learn automatically what you need for maximizing income from this business. Thank you!
Good day
Thanks for this educative piece.
Please I will like to know if I can use a residential house( a flat) to do poultry. How many broilers can fit into a 12*12 room comfortably.
Thanks
You should not raise any poultry birds in a residential house. A 12*12 square feet house is suitable enough for raising around 70 broiler birds. Thank you!
