American Sable Rabbit: Origin, Characteristics, Uses

American Sable rabbit is a very handsome and useful rabbit breed. It is actually the result of crossing many types of Chinchilla rabbits. The breed appeared in the early 20th century. And was developed in the year of 1924 by Otto Brock, who lived in San Gabriel, California.

After crossbreeding many purebred Chinchillas he developed the American Sable rabbit with different coloring. Recessive genes in the Chinchilla lines produced an entirely new color, with an identical body shape.

The American Sable Rabbit Association was formed in early 1929. After that the breed was accepted by the American Rabbit Breeders Association in 1931. And also accepted by the Cavy Breeders Association in the same year.

American Sable Rabbit Characteristics

The American Sable rabbit has commercial body type and is suitable for meat production. They are medium in size and slightly smaller than some other commercial rabbit breeds, such as the Satin or Californian.

The main color of these rabbits is sepia brown with darker sepia brown over the back, feet, face, ears and tail. Their medium sized body is well rounded with good muscle cover. The breed has graduated coloring with a sepia brown over the flanks that darkens on the face, ears, feet, back and tail.

It has dark eyes which also have a deep ruby red coloring. The hair of these rabbits is soft and fine. But the hair is quite dense and blows over quite a long period.
