The Briquet Griffon Vendeen dog (or Briquet Griffon Vendéen) is a breed of hunting dog. It is traditionally used for hunting, and it was breed to assist huntsmen with pursuing smaller game such as rabbits and hare. It is also known as Medium Vendéen Griffon.
The Briquet Griffon Vendeen dog breed was originated from the Vendée area in western France. It is directly descends from the Grand Griffon Vendéen, as breeders selectively chose to mate the smallest of the Grand Griffon Vendéen dogs to produce an entirely new French breed. It is quite possible that other hunting dogs were added to the mix, though records of this are lacking.
The breed was bred down in size by the Comte d’Elva from the Grand Griffon Vendéen, prior to the first World War. The Briquet Griffon Vendeen breed was almost extinct after World War II, but thanks to the effort of Hubert Dezamy, a French dog show judge, the breed was restored.[1]
Briquet Griffon Vendeen Dog Characteristics
The Briquet Griffon Vendeen dog is a medium-sized scent hound of an athletic build with an attractive coat of shaggy hair. They have expressive faces, thanks to their dark eyes and bushy eyebrows.
The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is a smaller and lighter version of the Grand Griffon Vendéen and bears a close resemblance to its forefather. The Briquet Griffon Vendéen should be robustly built and medium in size.
They have a narrow skull that is the same length as their long muzzle, and both the muzzle and skull should lie parallel to each other. They have slender ears which roll inwards and, if pulled forward, do not quite reach the tip of their nose.
They have dark and round eyes, exhibiting an alert expression. Both their neck and shoulders are long and elegant, giving them a confident silhouette. They have well-muscled, and long legs. Their tapering tail may curve, but not to the extent that it arches over their back.
The Briquet Griffon Vendeen dogs have a short head, low-set ears and a bushy double coat. They come in solid or mixed colors, fawn, light brown, white and orange, white and gray and even tri-colored.
Average height of the mature dogs is between 20 and 22 inches at the withers for males, and between 19 and 21 inches for the females. Average live body weight of the mature dog is between 22 and 24 kg.
Temperament
The Briquet Griffon Vendeen dogs are passionate hunter with stamina and fortitude. It should be able to pick up a cold trail as well as a hot one. Like it’s close relations with the other vendeen hounds, the Briquet relishes it’s time outdoors with it’s family.
While they are not high-strung, they are lively and enthusiastic dogs. They were bred to work in packs as well as on their own. They generally get along well with other dogs and are overly possessive about anything.
Briquet Griffon Vendeen dogs do not particularly take to being told what to do. They do not mind being cajoled, bribed, or played with-and if these things lead them to do something their owner likes, then everyone is happy. They are generally fine companion for children.
Lifespan
Average lifespan of the Briquet Griffon Vendeen dog breed is between 10 and 12 years.
Feeding
How much a mature dog eats depends on it’s size, age, build, metabolism and activity level. Dogs are individuals, just like people, and they don’t all need the same amount of food.

They must have time outdoors to short of hunting opportunities. Long walks are most appreciated, as they were bred as a hunting dog, and they do not tire easily.
The tousled appearance of the Griffon comes naturally, and any trimming is highly discouraged. Its double coat must be brushed and combed. The burrs and mud it picks up in its travels need to be brushed off its legs and belly. Its long ears can harbor infection and should be cleaned regularly.
Health
The Briquet Griffon Vendeen dogs are generally very healthy. But like all other dog breeds, they are also prone to certain health conditions.
Their common health problems include congenital deafness, allergies, epilepsy, hypothyroidism and collie eye anomaly. They are also prone to hunting injuries. Always try to keep good contact with a vet in your area.
