Ariege Pointer Dog: Characteristics, Origin, Temperament

The Ariege Pointer dog is a breed of hunting dog of pointing gun dog type. It is kept primarily as a hunting dog, not as a pet or showdog. The breed is also known by some other names such as Braque de l’Ariège and Ariege Pointer.

The Ariege Pointer dog breed was originated from France. The dog type used by hunters in the Ariege region of the Pyrenees were said to be descended from dogs that were crosses of the Perdigueiro de Burgos and the Bracco Italiano.

The breed was actually developed in the twentieth Century by Braqque Saint-Germain and Braque Francais with the local dogs, to give them more lightness and activity. The breed almost disappeared during the Second World War.

A team of breeders decided to devote themselves to the Ariege Pointer dog’s survival in the 1990. In particular we have Mr. Alain Deteix to thank for the survival of the breed. He headed that team of breeders and wholeheartedly devoted himself to the revival of part of France’s National heritage.

The Ariege Pointer dog breed is actually well suited to hunting wild hare and partridge. It is robust and very energetic, with an excellent sense of smell, and is a skilled retriever suitable for all kinds of hunting.[1]

Ariege Pointer Dog Characteristics

The Ariege Pointer dogs are medium in size and very beautiful. It is normally proportioned dog with drop ears. Their tail is traditionally docked. The coat is short and primarily white, speckled with larger patches of colors described as orange, liver, or chestnut on the head and ears.

The Ariege Pointer dogs have clean lines and a strong body. Their log skull is rounded and leads to a straight muzzle that has pendulous lips. They have oval eyes, and may be amber or brown and portray a sincere expression.

These dogs appear powerful but without excessive heaviness, robust and of strong. Average body height of the Ariege Pointer dog is between 24 and 26 inches at the withers for males, and between 22 and 26 inches for females. Average live body weight of the mature animal is between 25 and 30 kg.

Temperament

The Ariege Pointer dog is not kept as a pet or companion dog today, and it is kept mainly as a gun dog. Acute sense of smell of these dogs and strong retrieval instinct ensure they perform their job to a high standard.

Traditionally, the Ariege Pointer dog breed has been used in the pursuit of game, such as partridge and quail, though are adaptable enough to be taught to hunt a wide range of quarry.

The Ariege Pointer dogs are incredibly fit and speedy. They thrive when active and need to be given tasks to do to feel content. They are notably independent when on the hunt. And they do not rely on the companionship of humans or other animals.

Lifespan

Average lifespan of the Ariege Pointer dog is between 12 and 15 years.

Feeding

How much a mature dog eats depends on it’s size, age, build, metabolism and activity level. Dogs are individuals, just like people, and they don’t all need the same amount of food.

The Ariege Pointer dogs are medium in size and are very active. So, their diet should be formulated for a medium sized breed with high exercise needs. You can consult with a vet in your area for better feeding recommendations.

Caring

Taking good care of the animals is very important for raising Ariege Pointer dogs. The breed was born to hunt, with a great deal of stamina and a natural athleticism. They excell at their work and enjoy traversing uneven ground for miles and miles in eager anticipation of catching their prey.

These dogs will benefit from daily hikes and make a superb running companion, when not hunting. A dog that relishes the opportunity to explore off lead, they should be given the opportunity to do so when possible.

Large, fenced-in land in a rural setting is the ideal set-up for this dog. And attempting to keep them in a small house or apartment would not be fair or practical. They require regular training and activity. And the breed also require regular brushing.

Health

The Ariege Pointer dogs are generally healthy. But like all other dog breeds, they are also prone to certain health conditions.

Their common health problems include bloat, hip dysplasia, ear infections and patellar luxation. Always try to keep good contact with a vet in your area.
