Pantaneiro Cattle

The Pantaneiro cattle are a small sized breed of domestic cattle from the Pantanal region of Brazil. The breed derives from Spanish cattle brought to the Americas at the time of the colonisation of the Rio de la Plata basin by the conquistadores.

And the breed has been raised in the Pantanal region for more than three hundred years. But now the Pantaneiro cattle are considered to be at risk of extinction.

The breed was influenced by breed of Portuguese origin such as the Curraleiro and Franqueiro from the 18th century. It was the principal cattle breed of it's native area for several centuries.

Currently the breed is considered to be at risk of extinction and there were less than 1000 animals were reported in 2003.

Pantaneiro cattle are also known by some other names such as Crioulo pantaneiro, Cuiabano, Tucara and Tucura. Read more information about the breed below.

Pantaneiro Cattle Characteristics

Pantaneiro cattle are a small breed of cattle with short coat. They are usually brown or reddish-brown in color with a tendency to lighten on the back.

Their muzzle is usually black and there may a white ring. Both bulls and cows usually have horns, and their horns are of round shaped. Their ears are small in size and there are hair in the inner side of the ears.

The Pantaneiro bull's average height is about 136 cm, and about 119 cm for the cows. The cows on average weight about 290 kg.

The Pantaneiro cattle are a rustic and hardy breed. They are well adapted to the extreme climatic conditions of the Pantanal region. The Pantanal region is characterised by high temperatures and periods both of flooding and high humidity, and of drought.

The Pantaneiro cattle are well adapted to these climate. They are capable of surviving periods of food scarcity, and resistant to some cattle diseases.
