Fantail Goldfish

The Fantail goldfish is a very old goldfish variety. It was originated in the early 1400s, during the Ming Dynasty of China. It is the ancestor from which all modern fancy goldfish varieties descended.

Actually it is the western form of the Ryukin goldfish that possesses an egg-shaped body, a long quadruple caudal fin, a high dorsal fin and no shoulder hump. It is very beautiful and popular in many countries. Read some more information about this goldfish variety below.

Fantail Goldfish Characteristics

The body of the Fantail goldfish is egg-like and rounded. And the variety is easily characterized by it's split tail fin. These fish may have either metallic or nacreous scales, and normal or telescope eyes.

Although the telescope eyes do not develop until the fish is 6 months old. Fins of these fish are less developed than the Ryukin. They have double anal and tail fins. Their caudal and anal fins are well divided into two matching halves. Average body length of the mature fish is around 8 inches.[1].

Diet

The Fantail goldfish are omnivorous. They will eat all kinds of dried and live foods.

Breeding

The Fantail goldfish are among the easiest of the fancy goldfish varieties to breed. Generally they will spawn readily if adequate conditions are given. The mature females can lay up to 1,000 eggs per spawning, with fry hatching in five to six days.

Uses

These fish are ornamental fish species. They are very popular for ornamental purpose, and also good for raising as pets.

The Fantail goldfish are probably the hardiest variety of fancy goldfish. They are a great option for the novice goldfish keeper. They can survive in the same conditions as the Comet and Common goldfish, and thus make excellent additions to ponds.
