Brecknock Hill Cheviot Sheep

The Brecknock Hill Cheviot sheep is a very old breed of domestic sheep which was originated from Wales. It is also known by some other names such as Brecon Cheviot and Sennybridge Cheviot. It is a very old breed and actually originated approximately 400 years ago, but only recognize in the mid 1850s.

The Brecknock Hill Cheviot sheep is a result of crosses with Welsh Mountain, Cheviot and Leicester sheep breeds. These crosses made the Brecknock Hill & Sennybridge sheep what they are today.

Purebred Brecknock Hill sheep come in all colors except spotted. They tend to be naturally small like their ancestors. And the great majority of them 23" in height sheared.

The Brecknock Hill Cheviot sheep breed was introduced into the United States in 1838. And today the breed is raised mainly for meat production. Read some more information about this breed below.

Brecknock Hill Cheviot Sheep Characteristics

The Brecknock Hill Cheviot sheep are small sized animal. They are mainly white in color. Their face is white and have erect ears. The legs are also white, and a ruff of wool behind the ears. There are no wool on the face or legs below the knee or hock.

The Brecknock Hill Cheviot sheep are strong animals, and they are well suited to their local climates. Today the breed is raised mainly for meat production, but also pretty good for producing wool. Their wool is of pretty good quality and the staple length is 2.4 to 3.9 inches with a fleece weight of 1.5 to 2.5 kg.
