Dutch Landrace Pig

The Dutch Landrace pig is an old standardized breed of domestic pig from the Netherlands. It is also known by some other names such as Netherlands Landrace and Dutch: Nederlands Landras.

It was actually developed from the native landrace of pigs of the area, crossbred with strains from neighboring countries.

Currently the breed is found mostly in the east, north and south of Netherlands. The 'Central Bureau for Pig-breeding' in Nijmegen, serves as the breed registry.

The Dutch Landrace pig is considered as 'a meaty and efficient breed of pig'. It is unusually responsive to the halothane test, which can be used to weed out individuals with low projected survivality and meat production.

Along with the availability in Netherlands, the breed is also exported to some other countries especially to Japan and Spain. Read more information about the breed below.

Dutch Landrace Pig Characteristics

The Dutch Landrace pig is medium to large animal. It has the same general appearance of the other Landrace pig breeds. It is mainly white in color and has the characteristic large and drooped ears.

The breed has wider back and heavier hams than found on some Landrace strains. Hair of the Dutch Landrace pigs is fine and they have elongated nose.

The Dutch Landrace pig breed is known for it's high fertility and very good maternal abilities. It is a very intelligent animal and has an excellent sense of smell. The breed is often used for crossbreeding and also used for improving other breeds.

The Dutch Landrace sows are the basis of much of the female stock used in the common three-way cross, the Dutch Yorkshire pig, a 3/4 Large White (a.k.a. Yorkshire) and 1/4 Dutch Landrace mix, developed with "great stress on production detail", by the following breeding formula: Large White boar × (Large White boar × Dutch Landrace) sow.
