Lohi Sheep Characteristics, Origin & Uses Info

The Lohi sheep is a breed of domestic sheep from Pakistan. It is mostly found in the southern Punjab in Pakistan. It is one of the best sheep breeds of Pakistan, and also known as Parkanni.

The breed is used mainly for it’s carpet quality wool and also for meat production. Some sources also say the breed is from India.

Their home tract is Rajasthan, and mainly distributed in the Churu, Ganganagar and Jhunjhunu districts of Rajasthan, southern part of Hissar and Rohtak districts of Haryana. However, read some more information about this breed below.

Lohi Sheep Characteristics

The Lohi sheep are medium sized animal, usually with white colored body. Their fleece is dense, coarse and long-stapled. Their forehead is covered with wool, and the face is light brown in color.

Their skin is usually pink in color, and their ears are large and leafy. Both rams and ewes are usually polled, that means they have no horns. Belly of the Lohi sheep is covered with wool, and the legs are also covered with wool.

Average body height of the mature rams is around 65.25±0.74 cm at the withers, and 64.11±0.13 cm for the ewes. They produce medium wool, with around 39.8m fiber diameter.

Uses

The Lohi sheep is a wool sheep breed. It is raised mainly for wool production. But the breed is also used for meat production in it’s native area.

The Lohi sheep are strong and hardy animals. They are well adapted to their local climates, and also do well in some other places.

They have a rapid body growth, coupled with good quality meat. This is the main characteristic of this breed. They are large animals with deep and massive body.

The Lohi sheep usually reach breeding age pretty slower. They usually reach breeding age at their 12-18 months of age. And their litter size is single.
