Fish polyculture means cultivating various species of fish together by fully using of all water level food available in the pond and increasing fish production in highest stage. The fish species which don’t contest with each other for food and habitat, are suitable for polyculture. Rui, katla, mrigal, silver carp, mirror carp, common carp, grass carp, thai sarpumpti etc. are used for polyculture of fish. To get higher production from small pond or stream, polyculture is a must. Keeping healthy environment in pond, stocking good quality minnow, serving sufficient food and fertilizer etc. are very important for getting better result from fish polyculture. By proper care and management in polyculture fish production will be 5-6 times more than general production. The steps of fish polyculture are described below.
It will be better if the pond for fish polyculture become big sized and have capability of reserving water for 8-10 months a year. If the area of pond become more than 0.1 acre then 4-6 feet water depth is a must. There will no big sized tree in the shore of pond. There are some provision while stocking minnow in the pond. Stocking suitable species of fish brings success. And the success in fish polyculture depends on selecting fast growing and healthy fish species. The most cultivated and favorite species of fish for polyculture are silver carp fish, rui fish, grass carp fish, raj pumpti, mrigal fish and carpio fish. The considerations of selecting fish species for polyculture are listed below.
- High growth rate of selected fish species in the cultivated environment.
- High demanded species in the market.
- Select those species which has high growth rate and low mortality rate in high density.
- The species which don’t caught by diseases easily.
- Those species should selected which has more usable flesh in their body.
- The species of which minnow are available and can produced easily.
- The fish which are phytoplankton vorous or omnivorous.
- Select those species which are tasty and contain high nutrition.
- The fish species which consume less food than their body weight.
- The fish species which grows naturally by consuming less protein.

Applying Fertilizer After Stocking
Apply fertilizer after every 7 days after stocking minnow in the pond for producing huge amount of natural food of fish. Use 2.5kg urea, 2kg TSP and 100-150kg dung per acre. Keep the organic fertilizer in one or numerous corner of the pond and spread the chemical fertilizer throughout the pond. If the water of pond become excessive green colored then stop applying all types of fertilizer. Keep dung and TSP together in a drum or kibble for 12-18 hours. Mix urea with that mixture half hour before using in the pond. It is better to apply fertilizer in cloudy and rainy day.

Food and fertilizer have to serve by watching the depth of water, color of water, muddy water, and some other qualities of water and soil. Stop providing food if the color of water become excessive green. Because serving food in such condition causes lack of oxygen. Sometime watch the health of fish by pulling net in the pond. If any disease seen, then make proper treatment as soon as possible.
The main purpose of polyculture is producing more fish from small place within short time. By cultivating fish in above mentioned method, they will be suitable for sale and consumption within 6-7 months. Raj pumpti fish become suitable for both sale and consumption within 2-3 months. Use net for collecting fish. Start this process at dawn. This will ensure marketing fresh fish in the morning.
By cultivating in above mentioned methods 2-3 tons of fish can be produced every year from a pond of one acre.
