Fish Farming After Harvesting Paddy

In this method fish or paddy are cultivated in the land one after collecting another. This system ensures the proper care and management of both fish and paddy. Fish farming after harvesting paddy has some advantages which are listed below.

  • Fish and paddy are cultivated in different times. So, using pesticides in paddy field do not harm the fish.
  • The fertilizer used for fish farming can be used as fertilizer of paddy.
  • Root of paddy get rotted in the water and turned to plankton which are used as natural food of fish.

The steps of fish farming after harvesting paddy are described below.

Preparing Land
For fish farming in the paddy field, the land has to prepare by the following methods.

1. Contracting Embankment
High and strong embankment has to made surrounding the paddy field. This task must have to finish before rainy season.
2. Making Canal
A canal have to make in the paddy field, so that the fish can take place in that canal if the water of field get reduced or become excessive hot. This canal is also necessary for keeping the fish safe while applying pesticides in the paddy field. Digg the canal before rainy season.

Making Drainage Canal
This canal is necessary for ejecting excessive water from the paddy field during rainy season. Make this canal is such place and height of bank so that it can reserve sufficient water (1-1.5 miter) during drought. This canal can also be used for irrigation in the field. Keep a strong net or bamboo fence in the front of canal. This will prevent the entrance of harmful and unwanted fish from outside.

Species of Paddy & Season
It is better to cultivate paddy of summer season. But local species of paddy can also be cultivated. Generally, the summer season species of paddy are cultivated between December to January and harvested between April to May.

Plowing Land & Planting Seedling
Prepare the land for paddy cultivation by plowing and applying fertilizer in the field. Plant seedlings 20-25cm distance from one to another. Apply sufficient TSP and MP fertilizer during plowing the land.

Care & Harvesting Paddy
To get better paddy production applying fertilizer, controlling weeds, insects and diseases etc. should done well. Harvest the paddy in general system and keep a large portion of paddy root in the field. This root will help to make fish feed by rotating in the field.

Stocking Minnow
Stock minnow after harvesting paddy. The fish can get better facilities for growing during the whole rainy season. In this period the paddy field reserve water like a pond. Stock various species of fish like tilapia, raj pumpti, nilotika, mirror carp, rui, katla, mrigal, silver carp, shrimp etc. But the fast growing fish species is very suitable. If needed apply fertilizer before stocking minnow. April to May is the most suitable period for stocking minnow.

Minnow Stocking Density
Minnow stocking density depends on the breed and size of fish. Minnow stocking density in the paddy field per acre is listed below.

Fish Breed Minnow/Acre
Common carp, mirror carp, silver carp 1300-1600
Rui, katla, mrigal, kalibaus 1000-1200
Tilapia, nilotika, pumpti 2000-3000
Shrimp (Single) 5500-7500
Shrimp (Compound) 1600-2000 Shrimp
600-800 Pumpti
150-200 Rui or Carp

Care After Stocking
Fish farming in this method requires providing supplementary fish feed for fast growth of fish. Serve them 5% of feed like rice dust, wheat chaff, cake etc. according to their body weight. Don’t keep large trees near the field to ensure sufficient sunlight.

Fish Collection
The fish cultivated in this method become suitable for collection within 6 months or less. Collect all fish by using net. By proper care and management in this system 700-1000kg fish production is possible per hector.
