Fengjing Pig Characteristics, Origin & Breed Info

The Fengjing pig is a breed of domestic pig from Shanghai, China. Main locations of the breed are in the districts of Jinshan, Songjiang and Wujiang. It was actually named after the Shanghai town of Fengjing.

The breed is classified as a type of Taihu pig which all occur in the narrow region of mild sub-tropical climate around the Lake Tai region.

The breed is well known for it’s tasty meat, disease resistance and large litters.

Fengjing Pig Characteristics

Fengjing pigs are small sized animal. They are usually black in color with large floppy ears. They are easily distinguished by their highly wrinkled face and they also have a wrinkled body.

Average body height of the Fengjing sows is about 69 cm and the boars are slightly larger than the sows. The mature sows weight around 70 kg and the boars weight slightly more. Photo and info form ansi.okstate.edu and Wikipedia.

The Fengjing pig is a very hardy animal. It has a very high rates of breeding. The sows are able to produce two litters per year with about 12 piglets at first parity and rising to about 17 piglets at third parity. Sometimes large litter size of up to 20 piglets also occur.

Meat of the Fengjing pig is of very good, succulent taste, but the breed generally grow relatively slowly.

The breed is very popular in China, and the peak production of the Fengjing pig occurred around the late Qing Dynasty with a yearly production of about 200,000 pigs from the town of Fengjing alone.

Interest for the breed has grown most recently in the Western countries for the possibility of using the breed in the female line of a breeding program with the hope that they can increase litter size, disease resistance capabilities and improve the taste while retaining the fast growth rates of Western pig breeds.
